How to Set Up FreeTime on Amazon Echo Device

This video shows you how to enable Amazon FreeTime on your Amazon Echo device so your children can interact with Alexa in a kid friendly environment.

In May 2018, Amazon rolled its FreeTime service out for Amazon Echo devices. FreeTime for Amazon Echo devices lets you configure your device for your child so that they can interact with Alexa. Alexa can read your kids stories, play music, answer questions, and much more. Additionally, you can disable the ability for your kids to make phone calls and send text messages; you can filter out explicit music from being played; and you can control how much time your kids are allowed to spend with Alexa. If you’re family is already using F reeTime, you can enable it at no additional cost on your Amazon Echo device in a matter of minutes using the following steps.

Step 1. Launch the Amazon Alexa app on your smart device. You’ll land on the Home screen for your account.

Step 2. Tap the “Menu” icon in the upper left corner of the screen. The Menu icon features three horizontal white lines. A menu flys in from the left side of your screen.

Step 3. Tap “Alexa Devices” in the menu. The Alexa Devices screen appears, displaying a list of all Amazon Alexa devices associated with your account.

Step 4. Tap the name of the Amazon Alexa device that you want to enable FreeTime on. A new screen presenting information associated with that specific device appears.

Step 5. Scroll down to the General section on this information screen, and then tap “FreeTime.” A Settings screen appears.

Step 6. Tap the toggle to the right of FreeTime. A FreeTime screen appears.

Step 7. Tap the yellow “Setup Amazon FreeTime” button at the bottom of this screen. The next screen shows you all of the FreeTime profiles your Echo device will be associated with. You should see all of the existing accounts using FreeTime on other devices associated with your account. Additional profiles can be added through the Add Child button.

Step 8. Tap the yellow “Continue” button on the permissions overview screen after all child profiles have been added. The next screen will prompt you to enter the password associated with your Amazon account.

Step 9. Tap the yellow “Sign In” button after entering your Amazon account password. A screen appears, informing you that you’ll need to verify your identity.

Step 10. Tap the “Send Code” button to have a code texted to the phone number associated with your Amazon account. Alternatively, you can choose to verify your Amazon account using your credit card security code. An Enter Code field appears on the screen.

Step 11. Enter the code you receive into the Enter Code field, and then tap “Continue.” You’ll arrive at a Parental Consent screen.

Step 12. Tap the yellow “I Agree” button on the Parental Consent screen. The Who Will Use FreeTime screen appears.

Step 13. Tap the radio button to the left of the child account displayed on the screen to select the child who will be associated with this device, and then tap the “Continue” button at the bottom of the screen. The next screen lets you control what services are set up to work with Amazon FreeTime on this Echo device. You can use the toggles to control whether you want to allow your child to make phone calls or send messages through this Echo device, or to be able to drop in on other devices. Additionally, you can choose to turn on an explicit music filter. Tap “Continue” at the bottom of the screen after making your selections. A prompt appears to watch an overview video to learn more about using Amazon FreeTime with your Echo device, however, your setup is now complete and you can click the “X” in the upper right corner of the screen to close it.

If you ever decide that you want to be the primary user of this Echo device, you can do so at any time by navigating back to the FreeTime settings for that specific Echo device, and then toggling off FreeTime. A prompt will appear asking if you’re certain you want to turn FreeTime off. Tap the blue “Turn Off” button. FreeTime will be disabled on that Amazon Echo device.
